Supporting Nutrition Research
in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

The Nestlé Foundation provides a range of research grants designed to strengthen scientific capacity and generate evidence-based solutions that improve maternal, child, and adolescent nutrition in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Our modular funding approach allows researchers to advance from smaller pilot or training studies to larger, impactful research programs.

Research Grants

Applied Research Grants

Support for applied research with strong potential for improving maternal, child, and adolescent nutrition in LMICs.

Innovation-Oriented Research Grants

Funding for high-impact, innovative projects addressing critical nutrition challenges.

Regular Research Grant (RRG)

Full grant application of a complete research proposal according to the guidelines.

  • Duration: Up to 3 years; Funding: up to USD 100,000/year, and a total of USD 300,000

Training Grant (TG)

Support young investigators conducting MSc, PhD, or other training-related research.

  • Duration: Up to 3 years; Funding: up to USD 20’000/year

Mobility Grants (MG)

Support for acquiring skills, training, or techniques not available locally

  • Duration: Up to 12 months; Funding: up to USD 30’000

Institutional & Educational Support

Institutional Support

Funding for research or educational initiatives within LMICs institutions to foster:

  • Human resource development
  • Knowledge transfer
  • Strengthened local research ecosystems

Capacity Building Activities

Funding for research or educational initiatives within LMICs institutions to foster:

  • Fellowships and visiting scholar programs
  • Workshops and scientific meetings
  • MOOCs and online learning programs
  • Regional networks, alumni events, and training platforms

Funding Principles

All grant types must demonstrate:

Public Health Relevance:

Point

Clear potential for improving nutrition and health outcomes.

Topical Focus:

Point

Strong emphasis on maternal, child, and adolescent nutrition.

Local Leadership:

Point

Preference for LMIC-based principal investigators.

Capacity Building:

Point

Training, mentorship, and human resource development must be integral parts of the project.

Local Investment:

Point

At least 75% of the total budget must be spent within the LMICs.
